    I've been able to "fake" my way through 5 decades of performing on stage with own band or sessions or in churches on guitar. Now at 72, it's time to go back to the woodshed and learn the theory and the joy of playing jazz guitar. Your video was immensely enjoyable and educational. Thank you for putting a smile on this old man's face. My style is to keep on learning and growing and being curious. One never knows when the next gig call will come..

    Hi, I have a Washburn J6 (Wes Montgomery) and d’Aquisto New Yorker . A similar situation to what you demonstrate. Both of mine sound good but different, both are comfortable to play. The construction of the Washburn is excellent, punching way above its price bracket the d’Aquisto with its floating pickup is marvellous! Two superb guitars.

    The guitar companies just don't carry hollow body arch tops. I went to 3 major guitar shops and NONE of them had any hollow body archtops. I got lucky and found a Washburn Montgomery j6 on Reverb. I hope they continue to be available. I got mine. I love the feel of it against my body. I love to just hold it. I love to just look at it. They are a work of art.

    I'm a retired band director.I started 180 kids each summer. We always used the beginning band book and learned reading note s and rhythms. However, as soon as they were able we learned songs. Be they simple songs the kids lived to play songs. My secret to recruiting 180 kids was that I could play their favorite songs on ALL the instruments. That is what hooked them. You are right on with what you say. I have a friend who is an amazing bass player BUT he can't read music and doesn't want to at this stage off his life so his dream of being a session player will never ever happen. So he has to be a brick layer during the day when he could be playing all day long. I watched you video with the Washburn j6 and loved it. I now have one and am learning to play jazz.

    Ive been fortunate enough to have had a Santa Cruz pass through my possession and its the pinnacle against which i measure all ohert acoustics. I saw a 00 just like that one at my local GC (Asheville) and it was incredible. That said, Martin is currently putting out some of their best guitars since the pre war days, in my opinion.

    • @Minor7thb5
      @Minor7thb5 2 дня назад

      Small world that is the one that was at the Asheville Guitar Center. I saw it online and had it delivered to my Guitar Center in Natick Massachusetts. It is a 2019 in mint condition ... I called up Santa Cruz and they stated it was a custom order with the following custom options: Adirondack Top Adirondack Bracing and Hide Glue Cowboy rosette Cowboy Top Border 42 Style Fingerboard Inlay SCGC Logo in abalone headstock inlay Nickel Waverly Tuners The guitar is mint and I priced it out at on the site and using today's dollars it would cost over $9k to get the same specs. Needless to say that is not what I paid for a premium custom "bucket" list boutique instrument...it is an instrument to use as a measuring stick against any 00 guitar.

    • @Teletex82
      @Teletex82 2 дня назад

      @@Minor7thb5 Wow, small world indeed! Santa Cruz guitars are on another level. The one I had was a Vintage Southerner with a couple of added options. It came with about 9 or 10 other guitars as part of an estate that kind of fell into my lap. I paid less for the entire collection than the Santa Cruz was worth. Unfortunately, I couldn't justify keeping it since we were saving up to move to Asheville, incidentally. I still think about it often. Congratulations on an absolutely stunning guitar. I look forward to seeing it on the channel!

    I got my Mel Bay book about 4 days ago. I caught that tid bit of information from one of your other videos. I'm taking it one page at a time and not moving to the next page until I can fully play each section at a good tempo before moving on no matter how boring it may get. I think that reading music may expose me to other music that I probably never would play or attempt. Ready for the journey! Thanks for the tips!

    I totally agree. Using site reading books will teach you the notes on the fretboard because you’ll have to find the notes. It’s a slow process but EXTREMELY effective for internalizing the notes

    An interesting discussion to be sure, but the examples you demonstrate and talk about are primarily electric instruments. I would contend that it becomes a whole different conversation when you start talking about, say an unamplified Gibson Super 400 with an 18 inch lower bout versus a vintage Gibson L5 noncutaway with an a 16 inch bout. That is to say, how does the acoustic sound change when going from smaller to larger archtops? Regarding the nut width, hand size and whether or not you primarily(or exclusively) play fingerstyle versus with a pick begins to enter the picture. And then, one person’s ideal neck carve can be a total nonstarter for another person. I love The Loar LH-700 archtop, however, it is very common for other players to find that they could not get along with the thicker V shaped neck carve.

    • @Minor7thb5
      @Minor7thb5 3 дня назад

      Never thought about the size issue from the perspective of electric versus acoustic. However, I do say that I started playing primarily on a dreadnought. My point is I do concede that size matters to playability primarily based on our physical stature but our perception of said limitations does impact this as well. Now clearly on an acoustic instrument the differences and potential affect of size on the player are greater and this is not about a discussion on sound only but really playability. And yes I agree something with a lower bout of 18 inches versus 16 inches versus a parlor etc...poses issues to many. The last point I want to make is that the video is about size potentially being too big to maneuver around...the opposite may also be true...the guitar may be too small to effectively play. Thank you again for watching.

  • @jeffhildreth9244
    @jeffhildreth9244 4 дня назад

    MASSIVE ! In archtops I prefer 16". But, the sound of that Guild is notable. Agreed about necks. I prefer 1 3/4 (MAS Minimum acceptable Standard) 1 13/16ths and 1 7/8ths . I quit playing dreadnaughts because of size however the Martin D-18S (S) slot head, 12 fret, slope shoulder is a perfect fit.

    Thank you for the really nice tribute to Eddie! From being distantly related to the Bertinelli family, Eddie’s former father-n-law, told me 40 years ago that there was so much unreleased acoustic guitar work, including classical compositions. Hopefully, some day we can hear them! On another note, I believe the one acoustic piece you mentioned is called “Josephina” off of Van Halen 3 album! Love your guitar and well behaved dog! 🙂

    When I sell a guitar I calculate how much it would have cost me to rent it.. or what it would have cost to lease it.. much like a car. Then I do the research on current value and go from there. Owning guitars rarely is an investment. It takes a rare and desirable guitar to have increased in value. I have owned 15 Martins, I have a couple now. One is a 2015 00-18 V with flamed mahogany backs and sides. It's a rare one so has held its value better than the standard issue 00-18V. And now since the 00-18V is discontinued, they are at a premium. I am looking for something else with more "guts". Perhaps a 000 such as a first year 96 Clapton. I am also patient, and that is something to have on your side. Guitars are like ex wives and ex girlfriends and busses. Hang on long enough and another one will come by.

    Thanks for this. I'm with you: old-school tone seems to require heavy strings. On the other hand, the "slinkiness" of lighter gauges can also be exploited in interesting ways. It comes down to familiarity and touch. Be well.

  • @raffyzoo2130
    @raffyzoo2130 9 дней назад

    lighter strings have better treble, don't last as long-especially when hacked with stiff pick. hold pick loose. primetone picks are very stiff, get primetone with "GRIP" so you can hold it loose. or a 60 thou flexible pick & hold it firmly. oh yeah, change your strings often, not once every year whether they need changing or not! fresh strings are easier to tune, old strings go out of tune up and down the neck & on and on.....

    I much prefer TI or Pyramid flats myself, the D'addie chromes are subdued in the highs - although that might be a good thing for some? I have some extra-light ErnieBall flats with an unwound 3rd, which I'll be putting on a telecaster today. Great tone you're getting using that fat sounding humbucker, and isn't too muddy either!

      I hear you @gregorywhite921 I played 12s and 14s an all my guitars until I hit 64 last year. I still do 11s or 12s Tomastiks flats (sice their 12s feel lighter than D'Adarios 12s for some odd reason) for my archtops but for my tele, I went down to 9s and still get a good jazz tone by tweaking the amp!
